About Us

The Law Enforcement Liaison (LEL) Program is a grant-funded program sponsored by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Bureau of Safety Programs and Engineering (BSPE) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The goal of the LEL program is to reduce traffic related fatalities and injuries by working with law enforcement agencies across the state to boost safety belt use, reduce impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving and encourage traffic safety initiatives.  LEL’s work with agencies to help facilitate and pass on traffic safety information and training opportunities, DUI checkpoints, saturation patrols and legal updates.  They provide assistance and oversight for IDOT/BSPE traffic safety grants and meet regularly with grantees to review progress and discuss local traffic safety issues.  LELs work with law enforcement across the state to promote the State Highway Safety Plan and other Illinois and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaigns and initiatives such as Click it or Ticket, Impaired Driving, Speed and Distracted Driving.  LELs also manage the Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge which is one of the premier traffic safety programs in the State.
